Choice Cut: Monique DeBose delivers on “Damaged Goods”

One of the best things that happens to us at SoulTracks is when we discover new artists who we didn’t know before. And the latest one we’ve recently discovered is Monique DeBose.  Monique, a Los Angeles native, blurs the borders between soul and jazz, delivering instantly classic sounds that we’re digging.

Monique has just released “Damaged Goods,” the first single from her new album, The Sovereign One, which itself will drop on September 27.  On the album, Monique explores themes that are both personal and universal, crafting a set of seven songs that deliver messages of empowerment and self-acceptance, of love and freedom.

“Damaged Goods” opens with Monique’s rich, velvet vocals supported only by Dylan Meek’s solo piano. The song continues to build in intensity as the impressive group of musicians that Monique has tapped for this album match the power of her expressive lyrics. The tenor sax solo by Kyle O’Donnell (leader of the Sax Offenders and the Saxaholics) gives “Damaged Goods” something of a retro eighties feel, which reflects, as Monique says, “the pondering, woeful, yet strong energy of Sade,” one of her key musical influences.

We’re proud to present “Damaged Goods” as our newest SoulTracks Choice Cut. Check it out and welcome this talented singer to SoulTracks!
