Choice Cut: Chris Jasper returns to his funky roots on “Be Number One”

From being a key member of the legendary Isley Brothers to having a distinguished solo career, earning a law degree and being a devoted husband, Chris Jasper’s life includes numerous accomplishments. The belief that Jasper could achieve anything that he put his mind to was instilled in him at an early age, and that belief served as fuel.

That belief also inspired Jasper’s latest song, “Be Number One.” With a midtempo groove rooted in a driving and funky bass line that is reminiscent of the stank Jasper and his brothers-in-law put on those Isley Brothers and Isley-Jasper-Isley hits.

On “Be Number One,” Jasper tells his personal story of overcoming the doubters while also encouraging listeners to relentlessly pursue their own goals and dispensing advice on how to do so.

Jasper has accomplished so much, and it would be easy and understandable if he decided to rest on his laurels. However, he retains the drive that fueled the creative juices between 1973 and 1983 when he wrote those memorable Isley Brothers hits. Additionally, Jasper still has something to say musically, and people need to hear his messages of love and inspiration.
