Choice Cut: Candace Woodson pays musical tribute to Phyllis Hyman

International recording artist Candace Woodson has made a name for herself as an Indie Soul Grammy winner and a UK Soul Chart topper, earning the moniker “Queen of Sophisticated Soul.”  She also has a fondness for recognizing legendary artists who paved the way for her musically.  One such vocalist is Phyllis Hyman.

The late songstress is the focus of Candace’s new single entitled “Over and Over (Phyllis Hyman Tribute),” produced and mixed by Lew Laing. This tribute is special to Candace because she feels a ‘profound connection to Phyllis’ music and the emotions it evokes.’  Fittingly, then, “Over and Over” has the tone of somber remembrance; the melody is a bit melancholy, putting you in your feelings like most Phyllis Hyman songs do.

Candace’s salute to her musical hero is unique because the lyrics incorporate the titles of several songs Phyllis recorded such as “Meet Me on the Moon,” “Somewhere In My Lifetime” and “The Answer Is You.”  Candace ties the song titles together in a touching way, aiming to show Phyllis how much she’s loved and missed by fans, who view her as an “old friend.”  It’s evident how much she’s affected by Phyllis’ absence herself.

Speaking on her decision to honor Phyllis Hyman in her new song, Candace says: “It was both a labor of love and a deeply personal journey for me…I wanted to pay homage to Phyllis in a way that felt authentic and sincere, while also infusing the song with my own experiences and emotions.”
