It’s been looooong three years for us at SoulTracks since we last heard new music from talented soul singer Bryan Andrew Wilson. But his long-awaited follow up to his top five hit “The Ride” tells us a little about what happened in those intervening years. Says Wilson, “The song is about perseverance and motivation. I’ve been through hell on earth the last three years. I lost my mother to cancer, and I took care of her the last months of her life. I lost friends and my road manager to COVID.”
Those experiences and more led to a difficult time for him, but one that inspired the lyrics to his new single, “I Kept On.” Co-written with producer Nelson Braxton (of the Braxton Brothers), “I Kept On” speaks of finding the reserve within you to move ahead despite all the pain: “Seems like every turn I made was filled with pain and strife. But I kept on, kept on, kept on keeping on.”
The arrangement for “I Kept On” has the timeless feel of a bluesy soul number that could have come from Chicago in the 60s or Memphis in the 70s. That backdrop works beautifully with this message of perseverance and strength in the face of life’s troubles, and Wilson’s performance is a revelation, a soulful masterpiece.
