Happy birthday to bassist extraordinaire Verdine White, co-founder and longtime member of the group Earth Wind & Fire, born July 25, 1951. The Chicago native formed the legendary group with older brother Maurice back in 1970, and it went on to become one of the most revered acts of the last half century.

Verdine White’s exceptional bass skills and distinctive on-stage presence has played a pivotal role in shaping the band’s signature sound, fusing elements of soul, R&B, funk, jazz, and pop. His infectious basslines became a defining characteristic of the band’s chart-topping hits, and he continues to be a foundational member of the group well into the 2020s.

White has been nominated for eighteen Grammy Awards and won six, and has also been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame to name a few honors. During his time with Earth, Wind & Fire, the group has accumulated over 50 gold and platinum albums and sold more than 90 million albums.

Beyond his music career, White has been a strong advocate for music education and philanthropy, supporting various charitable initiatives. His unwavering commitment to his craft and his contributions to Earth, Wind & Fire’s enduring success have solidified his place as one of the greatest bassists in the history of contemporary music.

Happy birthday, Verdine!
