Happy Birthday to “Sound of Philadelphia” legend Leon Huff

Today we celebrate the birthday of the legendary Leon Huff, one half of the iconic R&B and soul songwriting and production team known as Gamble and Huff. Born on April 8, 1942, in Camden, New Jersey, Leon Huff has left an indelible mark on the music industry and continues to inspire generations of musicians and fans alike.

Alongside his partner, Kenny Gamble, Huff wrote and/or produced some of the most timeless and influential hits of the 70s and 80s, including “If You Don’t Know Me By Now,” “Me and Mrs. Jones,” and “Love Train.” Together, they, along with songwriter/arranger Thom Bell were labeled as the Mighty Three, credited as the with creating the Philadelphia Sound, a distinctive style characterized by lush orchestration, tight rhythm sections, and soaring vocal harmonies that became the hallmark of the soul music scene of the time.

Importantly, Gamble and Huff formed Philadelphia International Records, arguably the most important soul music label of the 1970s, and the natural heir to Motown’s 1960s domination. And Huff’s songwriting, production and piano virtuosity played an essential role in the rise of that label and the emergence of its stars like The O’Jays, Teddy Pendergrass, Patti LaBelle, Billy Paul, Phyllis Hyman and The Three Degrees.

Huff has been inducted into numerous music halls of fame, including the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He is an all-time great, whose contributions to popular music are difficult to overstate.

Happy birthday, Leon Huff!
