Happy birthday to the one-of-a-kind Jerome Benton of The Time, born on September 19, 1962.
Known as much for his comic persona and his musical chops, Benton (the brother of former Time bassist Terry Lewis) came to fame for his hilarious performance as Morris Day’s valet in the movie Purple Rain. He was also in subsequent Prince movies and became a member of the Prince-formed act The Family, and toured with latter day incarnations of Morris Day’s touring version of The Time.
Benton is currently active in the Minneapolis music scene, and is the host of the popular annual Purple Paisley Brunch event.
