For nearly five decades, guitarist, singer and songwriter Steve Lukatherhas been part of the legendary rock band Toto, while also building a remarkable career as one of the most prolific session musicians of his generation and a key player in the emergence of the Yacht Rock era.
A Los Angeles native, Lukather helped form Toto in the late 1970s alongside David Paich, Jeff Porcaro, Steve Porcaro, Mike Porcaro, David Hungate and Bobby Kimball. His distinctive guitar work became an essential part of the group’s sound on classics including “Hold the Line,” “Rosanna,” “Africa” and “I Won’t Hold You Back,” the latter featuring Lukather on lead vocals.
Away from Toto, “Luke” became one of the most sought-after guitarists in popular music, appearing on hundreds of recordings by artists ranging from Michael Jackson and Boz Scaggs to Lionel Richie, Aretha Franklin and George Benson. His instantly recognizable guitar solo on Jackson’s “Beat It” remains among his best-known session performances.
Lukather has also maintained a successful solo career, releasing a series of albums that showcase his broad musical range, from rock and blues to jazz and soul. He still tours with an updated version of Toto to this day, selling out arenas around the world.
