Randy Jackson of The Jacksons

Quick Look:

Born: October 29, 1961

The quiet, least known Jackson family male, Randy Jackson is nonetheless an immensely talented artist who carved out his own creative and strategic direction, both within the family act and on his own. Born Steven Randall Jackson in 1961, he was the youngest of the Jackson brothers, joining the family enterprise just as The Jacksons were entering their most artistically self-directed era.

Randy officially became a member of The Jacksons in 1975 as the group left Motown, and his arrival coincided with the group’s evolution into a band increasingly writing and shaping its own material. As a percussionist and songwriter, he made meaningful contributions to Destiny, Triumph, and Victory — albums that represented a creative high point. Randy earned co-writing credits on such tracks including “Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)” “One More Chance.”

Following the monumental Victory Tour in 1984, as the brothers’ paths diverged, Randy explored his own musical identity with Randy & the Gypsies. The group’s 1989 self-titled release leaned into contemporary funk, R&B, and new jack swing, spotlighting Randy as a frontman and producer with a modern edge. It was critically acclaimed, but its timing was problematic, as the A&M label was in the process of being sold, and had set its limited promotional resources on its biggest release of the year – ironically, sister Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation project.

Ultimately, Randy chose a quieter path. He gradually stepped away from performing, favoring music production, other business enterprises and – after some health issues – a more private life than his siblings. Later, he took an active role in managing Janet Jackson and the formation of her Rhythm Nation label. He continues to be an extremely underrated talent who made significant contributions to a particularly fertile period of the world’s #1 music family.
