Niteflyte

While Niteflyte may be known to many as the launching pad for R&B hitmaker Howard Johnson, the act had a very nice little run in the late 1970s and early 80s, and, more recently, a rebirth of interest..

Combining both soulful elements and an appreciation for the emerging funk and dance sounds, the duo, consisting of singer-guitarist Johnson and  multi-instrumentalist Sandy Torano, signed with Ariola Records and came out of the box smoking.

Niteflyte’s debut single, the AWB-like midtempo “If You Want It,” became a Top 40 pop and R&B hit, and helped drive the album to chart success. The group followed up in 1981 with a second release, Niteflyte II, but it failed to capture the momentum brought by the first album, despite solid tracks like “Love Comes Easy” and “All About Love.”

Niteflyte soon disbanded, and Johnson went on to a fine, if relatively brief, solo recording career, highlighted by the #1 Kashif-produced smash, “So Fine.” And, interestingly, Niteflyte’s recordings found new life among crate-diggers and Quiet Storm radio shows around the world.

Chance are, if you keep the dial on an adult soul station, it won’t be long before you hear a Niteflyte song, and a reminder of the talent that this unheralded act brought.
