Mint Condition emerged in the late 1980s as one of the few self-contained R&B bands of their era, writing, producing, and performing their own material at a time when the genre was becoming increasingly producer-driven. Formed in the Twin Cities, the group’s classic lineup included Stokley Williams, Homer O’Dell, Larry Waddell, Keri Lewis, Jeffrey Allen, and Ricky Kinchen.
Mint Condition broke through with their 1991 debut album Meant to Be Mint, which featured the hit singles “Breakin’ My Heart (Pretty Brown Eyes)” and “Forever in Your Eyes.” The album established their signature sound: a blend of contemporary R&B, funk, jazz, and pop, anchored by strong musicianship and Williams’ flexible, expressive vocals.
The group solidified its reputation with From the Mint Factory (1993), which included the enduring ballad “U Send Me Swingin’.” Their third album, Definition of a Band (1996), became their most commercially successful release, driven by the crossover hits “What Kind of Man Would I Be” and “So Fine.” By this point, Mint Condition had distinguished themselves from their peers by maintaining a band-oriented approach, often playing their own instruments both in the studio and on stage.
After a late-1990s hiatus and label changes, the group returned with Life’s Aquarium (1999), featuring the hit “If You Love Me,” which became one of their most recognizable songs. Internal changes followed, including the departure of Keri Lewis, but the group continued recording and touring into the 2000s and 2010s with albums such as Living the Luxury Brown (2005), 7… (2011), and Music @ the Speed of Life (2012).
Throughout their career, Mint Condition has been known for musical versatility, shifting easily between upbeat funk tracks and sophisticated ballads, while maintaining a consistent emphasis on live instrumentation.
Importantly, Mint Condition has not officially disbanded, though members, most notably Stokley Williams, have pursued individual projects and tours since the mid ‘10s.
