George McCrae is an iconic figure in the world of soul and disco, and is best known for creating one of the first and most iconic hits of the disco era.
Born on October 19, 1944, in West Palm Beach, Florida, McCrae’s musical journey began early, as he was deeply rooted in the church and honed his singing talents in gospel choirs.
McCrae’s career skyrocketed in 1974 with the release of his smash hit “Rock Your Baby,” a song that not only defined his career but also became one of the earliest examples of the disco era. Produced by Harry Wayne Casey and Richard Finch of KC and the Sunshine Band, “Rock Your Baby” topped charts worldwide, selling over 11 million copies. Its infectious groove and McCrae’s soulful delivery made it an instant classic and earned him a place in music history.
Following the success of “Rock Your Baby,” McCrae continued to release a string of hits that solidified his status as a soul sensation. Songs like “I Can’t Leave You Alone,” “I Get Lifted,” and “It’s Been So Long” showcased his ability to blend emotive lyrics with catchy melodies, all while maintaining that distinctive, velvety voice that became his trademark.
Though the disco wave eventually ebbed, George McCrae’s impact on the genre remains undeniable. He has continued to record well into the 2020s, most recently releasing a pair of duets with UK singer Lynda Law.
