Carmen Diaz, known by her stage name as Ms. Carmen. Born November 12th in Fairbanks, AK, raised in Philadelphia, PA, and made in Detroit, MI, she is a scorpio.
She started singing at the age of three. Her mother would record her songs on cassette tape as she would beat on cardboard boxes, sing and rap about her experiences at preschool with her friends. She then moved on to standing up on the seats singing on buses as she entered grade school. Eventually she joined the choir at church and was a praise and worship leader and soloist. Leaving home at 17 for college she continued her love for music, taking vocal lessons and joining the marching band.
Shortly after graduation from Morgan State University, she moved to Motown, Detroit, MI. After only living here for a few short months she joined a Motown cover band called ICON and began to sing around the city.In 2018 she began writing and singing her own original music, working with a popular local producer, Mel Melodic. In November 2018 she released “Greatness”, her first album featuring 9 original songs all self written. The songs are soulful and telling of her very personal story of heartbreak, love and triumph. The album was nominated at the 2019 Detroit Music Awards for Outstanding Urban Recording and she was also nominated as Outstanding Urban Songwriter. She was also honored at the 2019 Detroit Black Music Awards as Female R&B Artist of the Year and earned the title 2019 Michigan State Fair Superstar. Since then she has written a number of singles and in 2020 was nominated again at The Detroit Music Awards for 3 different awards. Her latest release, an album called Soul Symphony, is available on all streaming platforms. Produced by Grammy nominated producer Maurice “Pirahnahead” Herd (Les Nubians, De La Soul, Victoria Monet) and recorded at Rustbelt Studios in Royal Oak.
Her musical influences are Amel Larrieux, Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Beyonce’ and Ella Fitzgerald. She has a wide range of vocal abilities, jazz, rock, rhythm and blues, as well as hip hop. She is a diverse talent who elevates and celebrates positivity. Her music is empowering and inspirational.
