Raised in Chester, Pennsylvania, Avery’s musical roots are grounded in the church. She later studied classical piano at Spelman College, where she also explored choral conducting, orchestration, voice, and philosophy.
Avery’s career hit an initial high point in 2014, as she topped the Billboard charts with the single “Call My Name” from her album The Sunroom. The disc went on to win two SoulTracks Readers’ Choice Awards, including Album of the Year. In the time since, she’s garnered six Urban Adult Contemporary Top 20 hits, including “LUCKY” and collaborations like “Honestly” with Boney James. By the end of 2023, Avery had amassed 5.9 million streams on Spotify, with listeners spanning 182 countries.
