Althea Cunningham, a Grant MacEwan Theatre Arts graduate, an award winning musician and an interarts human working in: writing, acting, theatre producer and music. On The Verge (neo soul ep) was independently released in 2010 to critical acclaim. Her music has had international airplay and featured artist spots. The disc has been heard on: Black Soul Rhythms Radio, Time Trippin’ Radio, Bowl of Soul radio, The key of A, Ckua Radio, National Campus radio and Soultracks.
The System (hip hop) script is in active development as we gear up to tour The United Kingdom and North America in the 2027/ 2028 season. As a playwright several plays have been born in the twentieth century. The Snotty Vegan (one act) spent a year in development as she was one of three BIPOC Writers In Residence with Alberta Playwrights Network in 2024. In 2023, The System (hip hop) play spent a year in development through Riser Edmonton (producing incubator) and had a staged reading to culminate the year. In 2021, Sunkiss To Death had an on-line public reading to culminate working with Colleen Murphy (playwright/filmmaker). In 2020, I received my first writing commission through Hip Hop In The Park with 2 Metres (short) play. In 2017, Sweet An Nice (Fl ) had two public readings, one at Script Salon and the other at DaPopo Script series (Halifax, NS). In 2017, Sunkiss (short) was produced by the now defunct Snapshots 10 Minute Play Festival in (Chicago, IL).
In 2017, I was contracted by Saravasti Productions in Winnipeg to develop monologues from Sweet An Nice (Fl) and they were performed at the International Women’s Day celebrations. In 2018, I was contracted by Sarvasti Productions to develop monologues from The System, as part of the Fem Festival.
As an actor since 2020, Althea continues to increase her on screen presence in roles such as: the lead in The Invincible Jayson Garvey (sci- fi) retelling of The Treyvan Martin story, Jon Benet, Die, My Love, Second Guessing Fate and most recently as Nora in Birth of A Family was selected as part of the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival and is set release internationally in the fall of 2026.
