September 13, 2021 — Welcome back to Another Groove, our series dedicated to new music that is neither pure soul nor R&B but which contains elements of those genres and may please your ears. This week we feature the track “Louie Bag” by the artist Abbey Smith, professionally known as Yebba.
Yebba is a singer/songwriter from Arkansas about whom the music industry has been buzzing the last few years. Her ascendancy began in 2016 after a live SoFar performance caught fire on YouTube and she quickly became a go-to guest vocalist for a wide array of artists, including Drake, Ed Sheeran, Mark Ronson, Lucky Daye, and Sam Smith. Yebba’s recently released debut album, Dawn, makes clear that she is decidedly the real deal: She is a versatile and nuanced vocalist, her songwriting gifts are considerable, and she is comfortable in multiple genres, from pop to R&B to hip hop and beyond.
Our featured track showcases Yebba’s serrated contralto and guest rapper Smino’s rapid-fire verse over a seductive, head-nodding beat. This one is already atop the charts in the UK and will pull you in quickly! Enjoy.
