March 26, 2024 – Welcome back to Another Groove, our series dedicated to new music that is neither pure soul nor R&B but which contains elements of those genres and may please your ears. This week we feature the track “Symptom of Life” by Willow.
Willow, a singer/songwriter and guitarist, is the daughter of Jada Pinkett and Will Smith. She has come a long way since bursting onto the music scene, at age 10, with the platinum-selling single “Whip My Hair.” Now 23, Willow has gracefully matured into a thoughtful and quite able lyricist who has something to say and a gifted voice with which to deliver it.
Our featured track is Willow’s latest single, the first minute of which sounds like Tori Amos at her mid-90’s zenith but then pivots into a ferocious and compelling alt-R&B groove. This is rich, interesting and satisfying music. Enjoy.
