March 18, 2020 – Welcome back to Another Groove, our series dedicated to new music that is neither pure soul nor R&B but which contains elements of those genres and may please your ears. This week we feature the track “Anna From Woohside” by Stretch & Bobbito.
Adrian “Stretch” Bartos and Robert “Bobbito” Garcia are a world-renowned club DJ duo who also host the NPR podcast “What’s Good with Stretch & Bobbito.” Earlier this year, they released their debut album, No Requests, for which they assembled a group of gifted musicians to re-imagine tracks that they regularly feature in their DJ sets. The album is, simply put, exceptional on all levels: The tracks selected are diverse and compelling, the musicianship is phenomenal, the production is tight, and the groove is hip-shakingly terrific. Their sound is an expressive and organic mix of soul, hip hop, R&B and jazz, with occasional Latin rhythms and accents. Our featured track is a propulsive slice of instrumental jazzy soul with changing time signatures, a beautiful melody, and inspired soloing. Imagine Steely Dan with members of Santana’s rhythm section and the late Roy Hargrove on trumpet sitting in and you’ll get the picture. If you’re a fan of the RH Factor or the Soulquarians collective, this may be your new favorite album. Enjoy.
