August 24, 2019 — Welcome to Another Groove, our series dedicated to new music that is neither pure soul nor R&B but which incorporates elements of those genres and may please your ears. This week we feature the track “Pieces of Us” by Mark Ronson featuring King Princess.
As a DJ, producer and multi-instrumentalist, Ronson is renowned for his chart-breaking work with Amy Winehouse, Kanye West, Wale, and Bruno Mars, among many others. Earlier this year, he returned as a solo artist with the release of Late Night Feelings, a contemplative record that bears additional fruit with repeat listenings. Ronson draws from a wide palette of sounds, textures, and vocalists on the album, with pop, R&B and hip hop all well represented.
On “Pieces of Us,” the singer and songwriter King Princess adds an especially convincing lead vocal on top of a lushly-produced, alt-R&B track. Ronson drops all manner of interesting accents in the mix on this one, but his funk bass line, which punches like a heavyweight, is especially memorable. Enjoy.
