January 4, 2020 — Welcome to Another Groove, our series dedicated to new music that is neither pure soul nor R&B but which includes elements of those genres and may please your ears. We start off the new year with the track “She” by the British singer/songwriter Harry Styles.
Now I can already hear the carping: “Come on, Harry Styles has soul? One Direction, Wonder Bread, teeny-bopper, floppy-haired Harry? No way.” But stay with me, people, Styles is all grown up now, and his new record Fine Line, which recently debuted at #1 on Billboard, is a tour-de-force. Styles incorporates new sounds and textures on his latest, including alt-R&B, and the results are compelling. Our featured track swings and sways in ¾ time with Styles effortlessly sliding up into his unexpectedly soulful falsetto on the chorus. It is reminiscent of “Fame” era David Bowie, and you’ll hit replay repeatedly. Enjoy.
