October 10, 2022 – Welcome back to Another Groove, our series devoted to new music that is neither pure soul nor R&B but which has elements of those genres and may please your ears. This week we feature the track “Bad Girl” by DJ Tunez.
Tunez is a renowned, Brooklyn-based Nigerian DJ and producer who rose to worldwide fame in 2016 with the release of “Iskaba,” a collaboration with Nigerian singer Wande Coal. Our featured track finds Tunez back again with Coal along with another gifted Nigerian vocalist and spoken word artist, Victony. Their music is a hip-shaking and entrancing melange of West African rhythms, R&B, soul, hip hop and pop. There has been much debate recently among critics whether this sound may properly be called “Afrobeat” or “Afro-Fusion” or even “Afropop.” To my ear, it’s simply great music and decidedly “Another Groove”! Enjoy.
