(February 10, 2023) Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds has been a key part of the progression of popular music for more than three decades, particularly as one of the most important songwriters and producers of that period. But we miss Babyface the artist, who we don’t hear often enough.
Just a few months after his Girls Night Out production, Babyface returns with his first solo single in years — and his debut on the P Music label — the tasty “As A Matter of Fact.” Clocking in at just 2:24, “Matter” is a simple, infectious ditty that recalls so many of the hallmarks of Face’s biggst songs: earworm hooks, clever chord changes, and easy to digest lyrics of love (“I just met my heart for the first time; I just met the craziest girl in the whole wide world; and I just felt a sunrise in the moonlight and it shines on my heart”).
“As A Matter of Fact” has a timeless feel that could have fit as easily on 1989’s Tender Lover as on a 2022 project. This one should be a new favorite for Babyface’s fans, both on their stereos and in concert. Check it out below.
