(July 7, 2019) Avery R. Young’s “Sit Down Job” is a hard charging story of a man dealing with a battle going on in his life. The pressure to be the dutiful son who chooses the right career and a respectful stable life is at war with his desire to be a musician. The song begins with Young proclaiming his intention to find him a good ‘sit down’ job, get himself right with the Almighty and find a good church home. By the second verse, Young wants the world to know that he intends to be what he wants to be: a singer.
“Sit Down Job” is a track where the arrangement that fuses rock guitar, backing vocals by a choir (adding a dose of church infused call and response), and a driving and funky bass line, serves as an instrumental representation of the clashing forces whipsawing Young. The decision to include the hard charging guitars and the gospel choir was an intentional one. “Thought was to make it as rocking and church as possible so that it could pounce on that line between sinner and saint.” Mission definitely accomplished.
