(May 17, 2019) If last year’s Run Deep was supposed to be the proving ground for the musical offspring of a legend, then Deval Mahal proved that she is more than ready to make her own way in the music industry. She is as funky as she wants to be and when she carried the torch on that album’s power ballad “It’s Down To You,” and the world came to hear her burn. “Turnt Up,” the sleek, funky and steamy duet with Allen Stone was another highlight from a record that was filled with them.
Mahal returns to that successful formula on “Goddamn,” her new single. This track pairs Mahal with Son Little on a track that finds Mahal trying to hide her physical connection to someone new from the man she is currently with. Meanwhile, Son Little tries to entice her to reveal the obvious.
Mahal and Son Little have rapport that comes through on this track that Mahal believes come from a shared history that is based in the blues. “When I first heard Son Little’s song ‘Lay Down,’ it hit me and I knew I wanted to create with him,” explains Deva. “It’s important to me to have an authentic connection and relationship with whoever I work with. From the first time we met, we started creating this tune. It didn’t feel like work. We vibe on a similar plane.”
