First Listen: Melanie Fiona hopes you “Remember” her

melaniefiona

(September 22, 2017) I talked with Melanie Fiona in 2009, when she appeared to be on the cusp of something special. With a terrific major label debut album, The Bridge, and all the buzz in the world (even a Super Bowl appearance), she had the goods: great voice, a cool look, and a basketful of hooky songs that touched on R&B, rock and more.

But by the time of 2012’s The MF Life, a lot of wind seemed to be out of her sails, and the album stalled, amidst a question of what her musical identity was. There was never a question of her talent, but simply one of direction in the middle of a changing musical environment.

It’s been five years, and now Ms. Fiona is happily back with a new song. “Remember U” is a smoky, slightly bluesy ballad that reminds me how much I dig her singing, and also her keen sense of melody. Hopefully, this is the beginning of another chapter for an artist with top tier talent.

Check out “Remember U” below, and tell us what you think.
