We are very sorry to inform SoulTrackers of the death of legendary Motown songwriter and producer Frank Wilson, who passed after a long battle with prostate cancer.
The Houston, Texas born and Los Angeles bred Wilson moved to Detroit in the mid-60s at the request of Motown founder Berry Gordy, Jr. to join the songwriting and production team there. He went on to work with the Four Tops, Marvelettes, Marvin Gaye and just about every other famous Motown act. While working in the shadows of Smokey Robinson and Holland/Dozier/Holland during the 60s, Wilson became one of the label’s leading producers in the early 70s after the departure of H/D/H.
Some of the songs that Wilson wrote or produced included “Love Child” by the Supremes, “Chained” by Marvin Gaye, “Still Water” and “Nature Planned It” by the Four Tops, “Keep on Truckin” by Eddie Kendricks, and “Down to Love Town” by the Originals.
Wilson became a minister in the late 70s and left Motown. He established L.A.’s New Dawn Christian Village and continued to work in music and also wrote several books on faith and marriage. He was a true talent and will be missed.
