(May 27, 2025) It should not be surprising that Tahirah Memory floats comfortably in the musical confluence between R&B and jazz. She’s spent her entire musical life drifting on those currents, which can sometimes be complementary but sometimes contrast. Memory grew up hearing her dad, trumpeter Thara Memory, performing with jazz, R&B and funk bands in her native Portland. All the while, Tahirah Memory was perfecting her sultry, jazz informed vocals as she listened to all the greats on the radio and sang in school stairwells.
Memory released two highly regarded projects – Pride and Asha – that provide plenty of material for lovers of vocal jazz and R&B to enjoy, and now she returns with her latest offering, the introspective “Fight or Flight.”
The song finds Memory in a search for peace of mind on a number that fuses jazzy instrumental flights of fancy from woodwind instruments and piano with Memory’s soul and jazz inspired vocals.
“Fight or Flight” serves as a musical reminder that each person is responsible for finding peace of mind. The search might require a tactical retreat or demand us to advance and face our fears. What we can control is the choice. Check out Tahirah Memory’s new single “Fight or Flight,” here.
