(May 20, 2025) Tonight we say a sad goodbye Mark Greene, the original lead singer of the legendary R&B group The Moments. The sad news was posted by Greene’s friend and former groupmate Eban Brown:
I would like to send Heartfelt Condolences to the family of Mark Greene, Mark was great Man and Awesome Singer he was the Original Voice to The Moments “Classic Hit” “Not On The Outside” which reached No. 13 on the Billboard Charts Hot 100 in 1968, I had the pleasure of Performing with Mark when I joined Ray, Goodman & Brown he was with us for a brief period, Al Goodman thought it would be a great thing to have him join the group then, following the untimely passing of Harry Ray. I pray for the comfort of his loved ones! RIP MARK!
Born in Washington, D.C., Greene formed the Moments in the mid-60s with Eric Olfus Sr., John Morgan and Richard Gross. They were discovered by Hall of Fame songwriter Ed Townsend and were signed by Stang Records (formed by “Pillow Talk” singer Sylvia Robinson).
Greene helped shape the group’s early sound, leading their 1968 breakout song “Not on the Outside,” which became the group’s first top 20 R&B hit. However, the Stang label owned the name The Moments, and soon after the Moments’ breakthrough all the members save Morgan were replaced by Al Goodman and Billy Brown, the latter two of which became mainstays for the vocal group Ray, Goodman & Brown a decade later.
Greene, Olfus and Gross were signed with Volt Records as The Leaders, and had a short career there before Greene pursued a solo career. Greene recorded regularly, releasing albums such as Love Is More Than Spoken and The Mark Greene Project. He also briefly joined the group Ray, Goodman & Brown after Harry Ray’s untimely 1992 death.
In the 2000s, Greene acquired “The Moments” name and resurrected the group, touring and recording as “The Moments featuring Mark Greene,” right into 2025. He will be missed.
