(March 17, 2025) I wasn’t familiar with MojoFlo, before being assigned the First Listen of “That’s What’s Up,” their new single that features another Ohio based funkateer – Mr. Bootsy Collins.
I went down the MojoFlo rabbit hole. I listened to a couple of albums, visited the website to read up on the band, and I looked for any live footage of performances.
One thing that I learned is that MojoFlo is one of those bands that you must see to believe. Lead singer Amber Knicole performs the kind of vocal acrobatics that allows her to move from gospel-tinged R&B and blues to funk and rock.
Knicole displays that vocal dexterity while also doing actual acrobatics. She’s been known to levitate and slither through a hula hoop that is suspended above the stage. MojoFlo is a full-fledged funk band sporting a tight horn section of the kind that gave the self-contained funk bands of the 1970s that distinct sound.
So, it’s easy to see why Bootsy connected with MojoFlo on the fun and infectiously funky “That’s What’s Up.” This song, filled with the clever word play, all in the name of getting people unglued from seats and on the dance floor, has been Bootsy’s calling for his entire professional life.
Horns blare in tight harmony, guitars move from bluesy riffs to hard slashing rock and electric organs take listeners to the church of funk. That is indeed what’s up. Check it out here.
